Essential points

  • There is no generally applicable mandatory retirement age in Ireland. 
  • The State pension age increased to 66 on 1 January 2014 and since then many employers have increased their mandatory retirement age to 66 as well.  
  • The Industrial Relations Act 1990 (Code of Practice on Longer Working) (Declaration) Order 2017 provides guidance on the engagement between employers and employees in the run up to retirement.
