What we’re looking for
To achieve Chartered Fellow status, you’ll need to demonstrate at least three years’ current experience working consistently at a senior level. The scope of your role will be strategic in nature, with an impact across many functions; you’ll rarely work operationally.
- Shaping, strategising and delivering organisational performance.
- Partnering with the Board or Executive team to interpret business strategy.
- Combining business insights and professional knowledge to create and deliver long-term HR or L&D strategy.
- Evaluating the impact of people strategy through people KPIs and business metrics.
- Working in a complex, ambiguous, changing environment.
Timescales: You’ll be owning and shaping strategy for the future, planning for 3-5 years ahead, aligning in-year operating plans with the long-term people strategy.
- Commercially savvy, with an excellent understanding of the organisation’s commercial drivers and how to leverage best value HR.
- A role model for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), creating a culture of learning across the organisation, and up to date with emerging people and business trends.
- Shaping the profession through debate, networking and thought leadership.
- Complying with our Code of Professional Conduct.

What sort of roles are at Chartered Fellow level?
Whether you’re employed or working on a consultancy basis, Chartered Fellows usually work at senior management or director level. In larger organisations you’ll typically be a Director or Head of specialist area, working through teams to deliver the people strategy. In smaller organisations – or if you are delivering services as a consultant – you’ll demonstrate a sustainable impact at a strategic level.
Examples of roles may include:
- Group HR Director
- L&D Director
- Head of Reward
- Head of Talent
- Head of L&D
- HR Director
Which qualifications can lead to Chartered Fellow membership?
Study a master’s-level qualification and on successful completion of your studies you'll be awarded Associate membership status. You can then apply to upgrade your membership to Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow, provided you can demonstrate you have a minimum of three years’ experience working consistently at this level.
Advanced qualifications - equivalent to Master's-level
- Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management (HRM)
- Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Development (HRD)

Chartered Fellow membership fees
You will need to renew your membership on the 1 July 2019 (6 months membership) or 1 July 2020 (18 month membership) and 1st July each year after that. Don't worry, we’ll send you renewal information well before the due date to remind you how much is due. Annual payment will be collected until you advise us otherwise.

Members must hold current CIPD membership to be eligible for upgrading to Chartered Fellow. The fee to upgrade to Chartered Fellow by phone or face-to-face assessment is £250. If your application is successful, when you next renew your membership (annually on 1 July) you will be invoiced at the Chartered Fellow rate, current at the time the invoice is issued.
Fees are presented in Sterling, and card payments will be charged the exchange rate of your financial services provider.

Eurozone Direct Debit
You can set up a SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) Direct Debit to pay in euros. Please complete our SEPA Direct Debit instruction form and send it with your membership application form.
Direct debit payment amounts are based on our current exchange rate €1.15 = £1 (rate is reviewed quarterly).
