In October 2016, CIPD undertook a survey of HR practices in Ireland and received over 900 responses from the HR profession. With skills shortages increasing, greater attention is being placed on the retention and development of employees, while the HR function acknowledges it has more to do to build its influence and take advantage of technology.
A key finding was over three-quarters (78%) of those responding had experienced skills shortages in their organisation in the last 12 months. This is no longer confined to IT skills, but significant gaps have also emerged in operations, and to a lesser extent in support functions. Large companies employing over 250 staff were a third more likely to experience skills shortages.
However it is evident that, in response to skills shortages, businesses are adopting different tactics to grow their talent pipeline, with the development of their current workforce centre stage. Two-thirds are engaging in upskilling the current workforce and nearly the same again are increasing development opportunities. It is also evident that many are investing in their employer brand to attract the best applicants, offering work experience placements or implementing a graduate development programme.
The survey also found that 70% of HR professionals expect to see an increase in job redesign activity in their organisations, part of embedding agility to ensure the right people and skills are in place when required.
